The microlecture format is a short, topic-based lecture that provides students with a bite-sized, less overwhelming piece of the information base for class. By reducing the length of lecture segments, students have an easier time retaining information and also gain some flexibility for engaging with the material, whether it is via mobile devices or to better suit their time availability and personal learning preferences.
This video provides and extremely short, multimedia presentation of a discrete topic that is important for students to understand. It is an opportunity to reinforce specific aspects of learning in a way that highlights them and ensures better understanding of the subject matter that is most important.
I began this class with what I would call basic knowledge of the concepts and techniques for Humanizing my instruction. I was hoping to fill in the gaps I had, and challenge myself to do even more.
This class gave me some additional ideas, and challenged me to integrate more video into my instruction.
I am revising my courses to integrate more video, and work on some student-student video. I think it will enhance the community feel of my classroom.
Here is a video tour of my course home page:
I use this home page design to let students know that this class is going to be fun, and to help them feel less threatened by what can sometimes be a scary concept.
Here is the link to my wisdom wall screencast - It is an assignment that has two purposes: Forst, it provides an opportunity for reflection and closure for students at or near the ned of a class.
Second, these videos are available for viewing by the students who are just starting the class. They provide encouragement and perhaps even some usable guidance for succeeding in the class.
My Liquid Syllabus
I created a liquid syllabus for my class for multiple reasons that benefit students:
First, it's important to create a sense of connection to students by sharing a little bit of my own personal story.
Second, it's an opportunity to let students know that I am going to be a very human, very understanding instructor who is there to help them succeed.
Third, it's more fun than a regular syllabus. Fun is and important part of my learning environment.
The whole idea of the class is that fun and even silliness can can should be a part of the learning process. I want to invoke a creative, playful spirit in my students from the very first interaction with the class.
Here is a video review of my Getting to Know You Survey:
This informs my teaching, but also signals to students that I care about them and their unique needs. It helps guide my interactions with them, but also alerts me to students who may have specific or unique needs that will benefit from a little extra attention or a different style of communication.
